Whilst on the final year of my degree, my tutor John Yeadon, talking to another student, in a group crit scenario, said something like 'nobody makes a good picture every time they make a picture.' (I imagine that this was to console the student for having not made a very good picture and that the student felt a little better for a little while) John then pointed at me and said, 'except him.' (I seem to think that I then felt a little better for a little while as well) Rewind two years to the first tutorial I had with John. He proceeded to tell me a story involving a chef, juggling eggs, an omelette and a failed job interview. He was telling me that he thought that I, like the chef, fucked around too much. Fast forward to a few months ago and he sees my work for the first time since my degree and he says, 'well…its moved on quite a lot.' I took that to mean that it is quite different now to how it used to be. My aim within my work at the moment is to make things different, different to yours and theirs and different to mine, to itself. They are paintings by the way, paintings of many images in many styles. The picture and how it is made are equally important factors to me. Making different things differently. I am constantly reminding myself to push everything everywhere as far as it is in me to push it. While I am doing this I think lets have fun, and while we are having fun, lets fuck about, after all, they are all going to be good pictures.
